Oily Skin Care : Herbal and Home Remedies

Oily skin generally appears shiny, has rough pores and is prone to pimples, blackheads and blemishes. In oily skin, the sebaceous glands produce excess oil which oozes out through the pores of the skin giving it a shiny look. Oily skin could be due to heredity, hormone levels, diet, pregnancy, humidity, or due to the kind of cosmetics used. The excess oil secreted by the sebaceous glands is more during adolescence and decreases with age. But oily skin does not develop wrinkles or does not show signs of aging very early as in dry or normal skin types. With a little care, oily skin can appear naturally beautiful.

Oily skin requires regular cleansing with warm water to reduce the clogging of skin pores. Oil-free moisturizers should be used to avoid the skin from appearing shiny /sticky. Face wash should be limited to twice or thrice a day, as excess washing stimulates excess production of oil by the skin. If a gentle antibacterial soap or cleanser in combination with lukewarm water is used for a face wash, it would help in dissolving the skin oils. A clay mask would be good for sensitive skin types. Choosing the right face packs is also of importance, else, the skin may get excessively dry or oily.

A few home remedies and herbs that help in oily skin are described herein:

Apply a mixture of half a teaspoon of limejuice and cucumber juice atleast 30 minutes before bath. In case the skin is too oily, adding a few drops of eau de cologne will help in refining the skin pores, thereby acting as astringent and preventing pimples. Applying cucumber juice (before doing a make-over) on the parts of the face that tends to get oily, will help the face from looking patchy due to excess oil in certain parts. But cucumber juice should be completely dry before applying make-up.

Mud/clay mask is best suited for oily skin types. One teaspoon of clay powder (green) and a teaspoon of raw honey should be blended well, and the mixture can be applied on the face and left for fifteen minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. This is safe enough to be repeated at least thrice a week.

Applying dilute lemon juice (equal portions of juice and water) and rinsing it with lukewarm water and then again with cool water is also good enough for oily skin. Aloe vera gel has good healing properties and can be applied as and when needed. Similarly, lavender is also proven to be good for oily skin and can be used several times a day.

facial steaming using licorice root, rosebuds and lemongrass twice or thrice a week is good. The said herbs should be fresh enough and be simmered in about two pints of water. As the pot is steaming, place it in a comfortable table or potholder and sit within a comfortable distance, facing the pot, with a towel to trap the steam, if needed. After steaming for about fifteen minutes, splash some cool water on the face and pat dry. After this, the herbal solution, could be used as a toner and massaged into the skin using a ball of cotton.

Burdockroot, horsetail, oatstraw, thyme, chamomile, and Witch hazel are other herbs that are good for oily skins
